Public Relations News: Tis The Season for Garnering Publicity

By Terri Fassio, Public Relations Co-Director

  OCTOBER 1, 2023 --

The holiday season will soon be upon us. This is the perfect time for Granges to make a move to catch the attention of the public and the media. The holiday season is the biggest time of the year for organizations to promote themselves, but instead of saying “buy” like their retail counterparts, they’re saying “support us and give.” Does your Grange promote itself during this time of the year?

From Halloween through the end of the year, there are many opportunities for Granges to host special events, from Bazaars to Festivals to Christmas Parties and more. This is also the time when Granges should begin their new community service projects - such as having a drive for non-perishable food items, collecting toys for underprivileged children, making holiday favors for nursing homes, hosting a carol sing for the elderly, and more. This is the perfect time for Granges to reap the benefits the holidays provide and promote their activities and efforts in the process.

Some interesting holiday facts:

  • 86% of Americans plan to attend events and gatherings during the holiday season.
  • The average holiday shopper buys presents for eight different recipients.
  • Women give gifts to far more recipients than their male counterparts.
  • Over 40% of people purchase presents for their pets.
  • The average holiday budget is $700.00.
  • 25% percent of gift shoppers make their purchases right before the holidays – at ‘the last moment’.
  • 47% of U.S. donors give money to three to five organizations, and 15% give to six or more.
  • 97% of donors cite the impact of their gift as their main reason for giving, not the tax deduction.
  • The average age of a donor in the U.S. is 62.
  • Over 1 million employees are hired each year throughout the United States to compensate for the holiday rush.

The holidays are the most memorable season of the year. Granges should be taking advantage of these opportunities. What better time to get your Grange into the media and into the eyes of the community! Don’t forget to get the word out too - by utilizing the resources that are available at little or no charge — mass emails to members, press releases, posters, a sign in front of the hall/meeting location, social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and old-fashioned word-of-mouth.
