| JULY 5, 2012 -- There was a short article in our church bulletin about achieving success. It got me to thinking what is success?
I suppose the most common definition is being financially secure, having a good home and family and being well liked in the community. These are all good goals, but do they bring happiness or peace of mind?
In the Grange we could say success is holding an office and doing a good job, perhaps even learning the part. Another idea might be to keep learning the Ritual and being willing to serve in a higher office. Perhaps to bring members into the Grange would be another. What is success?
This is the article that appeared in our church bulletin: “When Ralph Waldo Emerson reflected on true success, he didn’t mention fame, fortune or social status. Ponder his thoughts—and you own definition of success.
“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a redeemed social condition or a job well done; to know even one other life has breathed because you lived—this is to have succeeded.”
