| APRIL 6, 2015 -- Wayne Plunske a long time and a Golden sheaf member had died on February 28th. Wayne owned the very successful Plunske’s Garage on North Colony Road and his distinctive red and chrome wreckers were always very clean and polished. They were always ready to go, very much like fire trucks, to the rescue of motorists and truckers alike.
Feb 12 – Originally scheduled for “Trivia Night” was cancelled because of the snowy weather.
Feb 26 – “Winter Tales of Ct” Members reminisced of passed winters in Wallingford when they were kids. Janet Haller remembers sled riding on what is now route 68 from her house down to the intersection of routes 68 and 150 which is about ¼ mile away. Back then there were hardly any cars traveling on that road. It seems hard to believe today because that road is very busy at all hours of the day. Anne, Jane and I talked about when we used to slide down hills in the wintertime. Anne Cella remembers the metal saucers that two kids could climb in and slide down a hill. They would turn and spin and you couldn’t control them very well but that was the fun of them! Jane Maxwell remembers riding down toboggans with her friends down snowy hills. I remember one year in the late 1960’s when we had a good deal of snow (I always thought it was 3ft!) with a thick layer of ice over it that allowed you to walk on it without falling through. It made for a terrific sledding. We had a field in back of our house that all the neighbor kids used to go to sled. It didn’t have a steep hill but it did have a lot of land so that you could go for a long sled ride. You would go to the top of the hill and run as fast you could and drop down onto your sled and ride it as fast as you could. Then when you finally approached the edge of the field you had to stop. The typical way to stop was to steer the sled around so that the sled was sliding sideways and it kick a storm of ice and snow until you finally stopped. Sometimes it didn’t always work; if you waited too long you would end up in the woods. Oh, those were some wonderful times. I hope that this brings back some memories of your own…
Joany and two of her friends from the Ancient Order of Hibernians will be doing a St. Patrick’s Day program at our next meeting on March 12th.
Marcia Cutrole reported that she has 9 vendors signed up already for our Tag and Bake Sale on April 11. It will be from 8 am to Noon.
