Killingly Grange September News Update

By Glenna Bruno

  SEPTEMBER 1, 2014 --

Here we are in mid-summer and thankfully the weather has been cool, muggy at this writing, but earlier this week it was cold.  Another blanket was added to the bed.

July 21 we held our annual picnic at the State Park in Pomfret.  There were about a dozen Grangers and state officers and lots of good food.  The food always tastes better when someone else does the cooking.

Linda Harkins who has been on our sick list was able to join us.  The mosquitoes were at a minimum.

We were in the Stowe Pavilion which as picnic tables and four fireplaces.  However, we didn’t use them.  It’s a good place to be in case of rain.

The plants and flowers that were planted earlier at the Grange Hall are doing well although the weeds and grass are coming along as well.  Some of the tomato and pepper plants have small veggies appearing and the squash and cucumber plans have blossoms.  So we may have some produce by fall.  All of the above has been planted in raised garden beds in the plot where a former house stood.  The house had been hit by a careening car that shot off the highway.  Master Bernadette, Treasurer Pat Lewis and Sec. Julie have been selling Lemonade and other goodies at the Putnam Farmer’s Market, plus other Grangers are helping with this community project.

Sept. 6 will be our annual Killingly Grange Fair.  Also planned is another Tomato Head Decorating Contest at Davis Park in Danielson.  If anyone plans on entering our Sept. 6 Fair plese let the Master Bernadette or other Grange Officers know soon so we can advertise.  More on that later.

Because this correspondent is affiliated with Wolf Den Grange #61 and will be a Granger for 50 years next year - as will the following Grangers - Richard Dufresne and Elsie Johnson.  Dick is overseer at Wolf Den #61 and Elsie is Secretary of Wolf Den #61.  I am Overseer of Killingly Grange #112.  However, our birthdays are within a month of each other.
