Colchester Grange August News

By Bonnie Trecarten

  AUGUST 9, 2014 --

Inspection for our Grange has been completed and everyone was pleased to accept our excellent report.

Several items were submitted for judging this year from our members, and we received second place for our Yellow Brick Road entry.  Thanks to Cathy Russi (scarecrow), Jeff Watson (yellow brick road), and Chris Bourque (tin man), for all their work on this project.  Also kudos to Polly Leonard for her field of poppies afghan entry that took a first place, and to all who submitted entries this year.  Great work by everyone.

The annual Family Fun Day at Zagray Farm was a huge success this year and our Grange enjoyed participating.  Plans are already in the works to expand our participation next year with an educational activity for children.

Our agriculture program is continuing to supply vegetables to local organizations and food banks.  Thanks to Leonard Farm for 40 pounds of fresh vegetables to our Colchester Senior Center, and to Chris Bourque for mulching straw for the giving garden.  This ongoing program is greatly appreciated by the community.

We are planning our holiday giving for Veterans and are working with the Veterans Center to obtain their individual needs.  We all enjoy participating in this worthwhile project and seeing the appreciation from the Veterans.

Special congratulations to tow of our members for their election to positions in New London County Pomona.  Dot Mrowka, Chair of the Legislative Committee, and Master Jeff Watson, Assistant Steward.

Thank you letters were received from two scholarship recipients who expressed their appreciation for the Grange’s help with their college educations.  Always a worthwhile cause.

The Colchester Grange would like to extend an invitation to all in our Pomona to attend an informational talk on investing each Grange’s savings to earn the best possible interest while taking the smallest risk.  We will have a financial representative at our Oct. 13 meeting at 7 P.M.  Please RSVP to Marion Culhane at 860-537-5437 by October 1 if interested.  This should be a very informative presentation.

All you travelers out there, don’t forget about the fabulous trip to Ireland next April being coordinated by Cathy Russi.  Please contact Cathy for details.

Let’s enjoy the rest of summer- it goes by way too quickly!
