Around The Grange
February 2014 News from Stonington Grange

By Lisa Herzig

  FEBRUARY 5, 2014 --

Stonington Grange members gathered around the wood stove on December 7 at Studio Farm in Vountown, home of Dick and Dot Wingate. Dick and Dot invite grange members, family and friends to the farm every year and give lessons on making Christmas wreaths and sprays. The Wingate’s gave their time and talents generously; many gorgeous wreathes were made that day. Dot is truly and artist when it comes to making the bows! We enjoyed wonderful refreshments and great conversation while making some new acquaintances. A holiday food and money collection was taken during our wreath making workshop for donation to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center for those in need. Stonington Grange also donated pajamas to the Grammy Jammy.

December’s meeting of the Stonington Grange culminated with a program by Lisa Herzig and her daughter, Ceilidh Burdick who traveled extensively in Britain last year. A Romano/British guessing game took place; photographs of artifacts found on a dig at the Roman Wall were passed around and members had to put names to the objects/photos; lots of fun! This was followed by an exhibition on how to pleat and fold a piece of tartan fabric to make an ancient kilt. A crossword puzzle was then presented for members to decipher; for example, what do the British call a _______? Refreshments followed; a 2nd century Roman cheese cake recipe called “Libum” was served as well as a 14th century recipe for a chicken dish called “Little Bird”. We also enjoyed traditional scones.
