| JULY 7, 2011 -- “Life is uncertain, eat dessert first” is an old adage and was printed across the bib of the apron Carl Svenson wore when he worked at a Grange function. He believed that motto! He loved to eat, was a pretty good cook and a terrific host.
Carl was a popular State Deputy. When one of his Granges knew he was going to be at their hall for a meal (or refreshments) they always had a large shrimp cocktail to put before him. Wonder how many others receive that kind of treatment.
Christmas was a favorite time and every room in his big home contained holiday TREES! There was a party to put them up, decorate, and some weeks later take them down. Kids who visited were given the job of counting trees- and that kept them busy.
Corny jokes were his trademark. Most of them were terrible – real groaners!
Before he worked at the Farmington Savings Bank, Carl was with the Collins Company and was knowledgeable about the tools made there. He had a large collection and was always happy to display them and speak about them.
When the company closed, a museum was developed. He was president and gave many hours of service- including conducting tours. To this day Cawasa Grange makes the museum an important part of their community service.
Carl was a devoted Granger and served in many offices (including Master) of his Subordinate and Pomona. He was State Treasurer from 1971-1996.
One year Lin Erickson and Maggie Schofield (of Cawasa Grange) gave him a cat for his birthday. “Pete” took over the house. When Carl was called from us, the cat needed a home and came to live with us. Hardly a day goes by when I don’t think of Carl as I watch the antics of the little old cat who thinks he’s a kitten- and should have been called “Mr. Mischief.”
