By John Fitts , Canton Patch (6/3/11)

  JUNE 29, 2011 --

More than 35 Canton High School seniors received over $53,000 in scholarship and award funds from over 40 sources this week for commitment and achievement in the areas of academics, service, character and leadership.

"It’s not just for students who rank in the top half of the class, because we know there are other characteristics that make a good citizen besides just grades,” principal Gary Gula said.

Included in the scholarships were those given in memory of two teachers who died this spring - Paul Kalasnik, 60, who died April 19, and most recently student study center coordinator at the school and English teacher “Jack” King died  in a car crash on Route 9 in Middletown May 8 at age 25. She also taught social studies at Canton Academy.
