  JUNE 26, 2010 --

Augustina “Gussie” B. Poglitsch, 103, of Burlington, widow of Rudolph C. Poglitsch died Saturday, June 26, 2010, peacefully at her home. She was born January 21, 1907 in Wethersfield and was a proud resident of Burlington since 1909.

Gussie was the daughter of the late Joseph and Augustina (Oniesczyk) Backes. She was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church in Bristol. Mrs. Poglitsch was an active member of the community, including the Whigville Grange, where she held several leadership positions, 4-H, and she was a 20-year Brownie leader.

Later in life, she became a passionate traveler and was a regular at the St. Stanislaus Church Golden Agers and the Burlington Senior Center. She was especially proud of serving as the Grand Marshall during the Burlington 250 Year Anniversary parade. She loved to garden and make arts and crafts, was a loyal sports fan especially to her beloved Boston Red Sox and UConn Huskies, was an avid bowler and had a special place in her heart for animals.

She leaves a special daughter, Arlene Monahan of Burlington; a son and daughter-in-law, Rudolph and Joanne Poglitsch of Burlington; four grandchildren, Jennifer Monahan-Searles, Stephen Monahan, Elizabeth Poglitsch and Katherine Poglitsch; two great-grandsons; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her two brothers, John and Joseph Backes and her grandson Peter Monahan.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Eileen Niksa for the companionship she gave Gussie and the Vitas Home Hospice for the excellent care given to her.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, June 29, 2010, 9 a.m., from Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, to St. Stanislaus Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol.
